God has given each one of us a personal teacher and guide. Jackson Jose, one of the Sehion Youth Ministers in the UK, writes about our Divine guide.

Modern technology can make life so much easier. When driving, Sat Navs remove the uncertainty and worry of finding a new route. When walking a good map is invaluable. We can now plan our journeys with more confidence that we will reach our desired destination. Wouldn’t it be great if we had similar guides for our journey through life? In fact, we have and His name is the Holy Spirit. God sent the Holy Spirit into our hearts to lead us and guide us through this life and into life everlasting.

The Holy Spirit is constantly speaking to us, “Your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, this is the way, walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:20-21) This is the voice of the Holy Spirit, who will show us the way to live our lives. We can only hear a voice clearly if we stay close to the person speaking and after a while we begin to recognise their voice. In the same way, by spending time in personal prayer, and listening to the Holy Spirit, we become familiar with His voice and can discern His plans for our lives.

In the Bible there are many instances, where the Holy Spirit spoke to specific people and guided them. St Paul planned to go to Asia to preach, but the Holy Spirit told him that it was not part of God’s plan for him. “Paul and his companions travelled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.” (Acts 16:6) In Acts 13, the Holy Spirit selected Barnabas and Paul as missionaries and guided them in the way they should go.

Whenever we get lost in our spiritual journey, The Holy Spirit gives us an opportunity to realise our mistake and turn back and renew our journey towards our heavenly abode. Just like, when the prodigal son came to know the truth, he realised that going away from his father was a mistake and took a U-turn. Hence in our spiritual journey, Holy Spirit is our navigator, who helps us to walk back to the road that is free from sin.

As a Sat Nav in a car shows us when to turn left or right, the Holy Spirit shows us the right path to take in our spiritual and daily lives and helps us to fulfill God’s plan for us. Why not invite God’s Holy Spirit into your life today, and then you will experience the peace and happiness that only God can give. Come Holy Spirit, into my life today. Help me to stay close to You and to listen to Your voice. Show me Your plan for my life and help me to follow it. Amen.
